The Cat Maw The Shadowland Saga Volume 1 Brooke Burgess 9781500971656 Books

Two main ingredients to this story caught my attention: cats and mystery. And if you're into these topics yourself, well, are you in for a treat!

Once I sat down to read this book, I actually read it straight through in a single day. I wanted to know what was going to happen with this young boy Billy, as he's being drawn deeper and deeper into this terrifying dreamscape filled with dark whispers and haunting prophesies. All the while he must simultaneously deal with more regular youngster troubles - being bullied and dealing with his loving but strict parents with whom he does not dare share his frightening experiences. Instead, Billy must trust on the town's "crazy cat lady" and a brand new friend who loves dogs more than cats (blasphemy!), alongside an unknown feline companion offering to help him - for a price. Even as Billy struggles to decide what price would be worth paying, his nightmares only grow worse and time ever shorter...

Brooke Burgess' writing is, in a single word, evocative. Not only does he paint a world of intriguing lore with a touch (or should I say, giant heap) of feline love, but he does it all through the eyes of a young boy who feels utterly human and painfully familiar, making it so easy for readers to relate to him and get swept away in his story. In all his awkwardness, Billy becomes the quiet hero by daring to unfold the mysteries that are put in front of him and thereby inspiring any reader, young and old, to have courage even in the darkest of times.

And the best part is: this is only the beginning...

The Cat Maw The Shadowland Saga Volume 1 Brooke Burgess 9781500971656 Books Reviews

I closed my eyes and sighed while holding the book to my chest. The Cat's Maw has it all, writing, characters, worlds that move you.

This is the book that got me back on track to reading just for fun again. It fired up my imagination and creativity and allowed me to delve deeply into other worlds that I so love living in. I'm already homesick for the town of Appleton where such fantastic adventures await Billy Brahm.

Added bonus is that Billy isn't just an only child who struggles to connect with his peers. He dreams...of cats that can TALK.

I love that as much as Billy may feel like a weakling, he's courageous! To find the key, to save his friends he will suffer the disappointment of his friend Mrs. Thomas, miss pizza night and face the wrath of his parents.

He's a hero - he just doesn't know it yet!
My Godson wrote this review. I bought it for him for xmas, as well as a copy for myself. He read it for personal enjoyment and was able to use it for a book report/reading lessons for school. He's greatly anticipating the next edition!

His Review

I Love this book.

The reason why I loved it so much is because the boy in the book named Billy was very clumsy and sorta like me. It was very funny when Billy's mom got mad and yelled at Billy.

The Dad in the book was kinda silly but cool at the same time because he built Billy a tree fort when i imagined it it had a wood floor a slide built up with nails and wood supports. Also the fort had swings and windows.

My rating is 10/10. I was concentrating on the book and was very interested. I really like this book and I think you will be very successful!

Thank you Mr. Burgess for creating such a wonderful novel which ignites the imagination of youngsters and adults alike! Well done sir!
From the first chapter to the promise of the next edition in the Shadowland Saga, this book captured us. Listed as middle-school appropriate, I enjoyed it as much as my 13 year old son did! Read with wide-eyes and edge-of-seat attention to what would happen next, the Cat's Maw definitely delivers on all the positive reviews. It invites readers of all ages into a world of soul-baring adventures and courageous revealings. It's the sort of book you read in a day because you can't put it down and then hand it out to every youth and adult you know with a conspiratorial smile because epic storytelling of consequence is so rare and so very addictive!

The world the author creates feels as real, perhaps more so, than the one we walk in.

There is depth and magic and moments of connection that makes this a must-have on all Gift Lists for those 'hard-to-impress-too-cool-for-the-world' middle schoolers and those of any age who salivate over language and love to fall head-over-heart in love with stories with the capacity to change you.

Can't wait for the next instalment in the Shadowland Saga! (We originally had the audiobook and enjoyed it so much we just ordered the paperback through as my son desired a hard copy to have as well!)
