John Constantine, a favorite conman and magus, as an individual of questionable choices and life paths appears once more in this Vertigo style story. If you're familiar with Constantine of the Vertigo style of comics, before more current or present mainstream versions, you'll know that John's not a saint. I enjoy this element brought into the story and showing the internal conflict that John faces when drawn into events as they unfold before him. The story itself starts a bit slow, but it does pick up and you can find yourself trying to piece events together as different characters and paths eventually merge to cross with that of Constantine himself. Shirley works to keep more towards the Vertigo style instead of what may have been presented in other works of media. This story centers around war, it's not pretty and can be harsh. You have a cult intent on bringing about the apocalypse to introduce their new version of paradise. Mercury, who's older since her first appearance in the Vertigo comic and writing style of Jamie Delano, caught in the middle of it all and in danger. Gatewood, a man involved in the war and drawn into Constantine's path within the chaos as the world edges toward destruction. These are just some of the individuals, more get tangled in the events to come as it unfolds. Once the pace picks up, the threads of other individuals getting tangled up with John Constantine, quickly merge to conclude the end of this story. It was a faster read for me than most books I've picked up lately-- I got quickly drawn in after the pace picks up, so it's worth it to be a little patient.Tags : War Lord (John Constantine Hellblazer) [John Shirley] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. War Lord John Constantine Hellblazer John Shirley 9781416503439 Books Reviews
the book does well in the beginning and keeps pace trough the story at an entertaining rate.
the story unfolds nicly, and the finale has a nice setup.
and then the story goes all disney on you the last 10 pages。are about as un `hellblazer` as you can get. to cut it short w/o spoiling anything, it is happy.
Order came much earlier than expected and exactly as described. As a Constantine fan, looking forward to reading this book! Thanks, Goodwill!
This was a pretty good read, all things considered. Overall, I liked it, although, I felt, this being a novel adapted from a comic book, that there were a few things that didn't quite translate well, from the comics to the novel, but that said fans of Hellblazer should definitely give it a read.
The first John Shirley book I pick up happens to be War Lord. Well, I'm glad it was. It was a blast, and I felt
it fit right in with the comics. Shirley didn't need comic art to help us see what Johnny was up to, which is a tough to
do when you are going from one medium to the next (unless, of course, you are an excellent writer). I hope
he writes more Constantine novels, though, I am thoroughly enjoying his other works now because of this
book. Peace.
I found this novel to be a satisfying summer read. I was led to it because of the author's above average novelization of the first Constantine film. That, and the fact that he is a Bram Stoker award winner and a coscreenwriter on the original CROW made me fairly certain that this book would be considerably above average as metaphysical adventures go.
Not wanting to spoil the story it is impossible to go into any detail. However, the detail in the story about matters occult is very satisfying. There are no embarrassing gaffs. The same goes about details of the main character's background and life- the author did his homework.
Actually, I would call this book a fairly serious addition to the John Constantine cannon. We get a glimpse into just how a man could interact with the forces of heaven and hell and still remain such a bloody-minded mercenary. It takes a lot of personal damage and dysfunction (extending into previous lives) to make a John Constantine
"What? This world? Taken a look around it recently? Not at all sure I want to prevent it from wiping the slate clean. Might be better. Lives of quiet desperation ain't in it. Most people are in a bloody existential nightmare at best. Hobbesian, it is, and worse."
And this is AFTER he has personally dealt with gods and angels...
Good Hellblazer story! It captures John and the atmosphere of the Vertigo series, though you're not going to find much in the way of meaningful social commentary here. Got some good-old-boy sexism in it, but then that too is in line with John's character (and from what I've seen, par for the course with this author). Shirley is no Jamie Delano, but it's definitely worth picking up if you're in Hellblazer withdrawal.
