Although I can be a snooty reader of literature, every once in awhile I need a Bertrice Small fix. She's really the only romance writer that I read and from a distance, I just adore this writer.

Found this book while searching to see if Small had written any new books that were interesting. Back almost 30 years ago, I read the Skye O'Malley series and just fell in love with the escapism these books provided for me.

This book was good as well. Probably not as good as the original Skye books (or even the following Jasmine books), I did find some repetition of character development and plot. This character doesn't deserve the accolades for being brave, strong, fearless, gorgeous, etc., that is shown in this book.

She kindof just stumbles through and somehow becomes a hero. At any rate, it's a fun read. And sometimes, that's all you need.

It's recommended for those who are a fan of Small's books. Might not be your favorite, though.

Intrigued Bertrice Small 9780739415528 Books Reviews

As always this book is quite entertaining, the O'Malley saga continues. I thoroughly enjoy this and all of me Smalls writing
Another great story continuing the Skye O'Malley saga. Small brings you into the family and let's you experience life as they live it; good, bad and exceptionally romantic.
I have long been a fan of Skye this is the greatest series ever. I cannot get enough but I am sad that the main characters are aging. I can never get enough and I would recommend this series to anyone no disappointments ever
As always Beatrice Small has written another skye book. I love following the lives of her children.
So many of them take after her in some small way.
I wish she would continue with her family
have always been a fan of Bertrice Small. She draws you in and keeps you there until you turn the last page and think, "Oh Darn!! Its over!!"
This last in the series was good, but not the best of the lot. Her prose is, as ever, terrific. My main complaint is the lack of development between the relationship between Gabriel and Autumn. The book would have been so much more had the author interwoven more of the hero within the story rather than almost making him an afterthought toward the end. What I really enjoyed, especially as a novice genealogist, is following this family history over several generations.
I stopped reading Bertrice Small years ago, as her books became rehashes of each other and my taste in fiction overall declined. But I had a hankering to read about Autumn's adventures during the Protectorate, so I got my hands on this book recently and delved in. This story begins about twenty years after BESIEGED. James Leslie, Jasmine's husband, is killed in battle during the English Civil War. Faced with a bleak future in Cromwellian England, Jasmine and their daughter Autumn flee to France, where Autumn's marriage prospects are hoped to be brighter. Within a few years of her arrival, she weds a French vineyard owner, Sebastian d'Oleron, and has a daughter. But tragedy strikes when Sebastian dies of a heart attack. Cut to Autumn being coerced into Louis XIV's bed, having another child, then traipsing back to England during the Restoration to dally with Charles II before she weds his minion Gabriel Bainbridge and lives happily ever after.

I wanted to read this book because I was curious as to how Autumn's story would play out. Also, I'm a history buff and am intrigued by the English Civil War, and Small's spot-on research certainly led depth to this era of British history. That said, this book came up a little short for me in some aspects. First, it was a letdown to witness Autumn's sad decline from sheltered virgin to trollop. I felt icky to see her degrade herself in the way she carried on with King Charles in order to attain a title and her own home.

With the exception of d'Oleron, and perhaps King Louis, there seemed to be no depth to Autumn's paramours. Charles and Gabriel struck me as one-dimensional, and Small shouldn't have encapsulated Autumn and Gabriel's courtship before sending them to the altar. I would have liked to have seen how their relationship developed and then bloomed, but Small seemed to want to wrap it up by that point. Well, I got what I came for and am content. Read INTRIGUED if you want to keep up with Skye's descendants' adventures, but be warned that it's missing the depth Small usually devotes to this series. Also be warned that you'll go crazy trying to keep Skye's family tree straight!
